today in nature...

This afternoon, as part of our Great Outdoor Challenge, we inspected the new happenings in the plant life around us. First up were these gorgeous irises which were transplanted from a friend's yard when her beds needed to be thinned. What a beautiful bunch they are! I'm amazing at how many buds we're getting this year, their first year in our yard.

Next up we examined the maple tree which is becoming downright leafy. I never noticed until this year that the leaves start out a very similar color to their ending color. Fascinating!

The remnants of our kale are currently in bloom too, which is a fun process to watch. We don't really want to tear them out of the garden because we're excited to see what will happen next.

Of course, the nature examination only lasted so long...then the water guns, recently acquired at a friend's birthday party, came out in full force.

There's something about a water-gun-toting little girl in a cute skirt that's fun to watch.

Even Finn got in on the water war for a few minutes.

I'm only including this last photo because I think it's so cool how you can see the sunlight glinting off the water as it sprays from Philip's gun. Very neat shot, I thought.

Hope your kids enjoyed their time outdoors today as much as mine did!

  2. You have no idea how happy it makes me to see our iris blooming in your yard! It was a pass-along to me in the first place-- the plant that circles the world! That last photo is magic!

  4. It is so much fun to see things growing and coming alive. We are observing the skunk cabbage which looks quite beautiful as it starts to grow.
    Warm wishes, Tonya
