a Lego poem by Philip

Philip had an assignment for his AG class to write a poem that was a metaphor. The metaphor was to center around the story of the Mexican migrant workers in Arizona in the 1920s who were making such low wages that they walked out of their jobs and walked some 300 miles in protest. As Lego is the language that Philip speaks best, he used a Lego man as a metaphor.

Lego Sadness

I am the Lego head.
What a sad life I have lead.
I am the Lego hand.
I am worth a pile of sand.

I am the Lego arm.
I do not mean any harm.
I am the Lego leg.
Bad Legos I wish to peg.

And then there's the body.
We don't know about him.
He's come to help.
We now are one!
We now can walk & talk!
Our former lives are dim!
Yay!

Project Redecoration: Philip's and Finn's room

Philip's and Finn's shared room was the last room we tackled in the days before Christmas, and we only had 2 days to complete the task while Finn was with my parents spending time at my grandmother's house. When they initially began sharing a room, it made sense to separate their beds and really give them each a separate space in the room. They each had their own wall hangings, bookshelves, and floorspace to maintain. Now that they are older, it makes more sense that we would reclaim some of the floorspace and give them more area to play, especially with the number of Legos that are often scattered over the floor.

We stacked the bunks again, which thrilled both of them. I decided on gray walls with red accents for their room. Finn's favorite color is red, and there is plenty of red in his quilt, which I did not intend to replace quite yet. Philip's favorite color is yellow, which is hard to make work in a boy's bedroom, but he also loves Star Wars and Legos; it seemed easy to incorporate these with the gray. Philip got a new gray wool blanket for a bed covering for easier bed-making. I painted the little unfinished wooden shelf in their room with leftover red paint from our picnic table. They each got a string of rope lights hung above their beds for nighttime reading. I also made a hanging book holder for Philip's bed (to avoid the thundering crash of books kicked off the bed during the night) from leftover fabric from his pillow. Finn's new embroidered pillow appeared on his bed during the redecoration as well.

Philip got a set of Star Wars Lego prints that I found on etsy over his bed. The biggest addition to their room was a new Lego table, an Ikea hack actually, found here. The only difference in ours is that I bought regular blue building plates for the table top. (I also just realized that I didn't take a picture from an angle that showed the new Keep Calm and Build On print over their Lego table.) Their curtains are just an inexpensive pair from Target.

On the other side of their room, we put both of their bookshelves together on the opposite wall. We also limited the shelves to books and a few games and puzzles to minimize the clutter that used to build there. (Their newly red shelf by their bed is for their personal effects to hopefully keep the clutter contained.) Their red lamp was transferred from Paulie's old room, and the wall hangings on this wall were beloved pieces from their old room. With the floor space remaining on this side of the room, we may eventually add a reading chair in front of the bookshelves, but we haven't completely decided yet.

Thus endeth the tour of the newly redecorated kids rooms. It was a fun project; their reactions were priceless; but I don't intend to do anything this arduous in the days before Christmas ever again. ;)

celebrating Philip!

This weekend brought another round of celebrations at our house. Philip turned 11 this weekend! He and Paul had a special weekend for his actual birthday: Paul whisked him off to Atlanta on Friday afternoon for a weekend of one-on-one time and a trip to Legoland Discovery Center.

Their special trip meant that Philip had to wait until yesterday, the day following his birthday, for our family birthday celebrations and the remainder of his gifts.

Following his birthday meal, we ate an autumnal birthday treat of Pumpkin Cream Cheese Whoopie Pies.

We sang; he blew out candles; and then it was gifting time.

His main gift this year was the trip to Atlanta with his dad, but we had a few small tokens for him to open at the celebration. Elizabeth spent her own money to buy him a Lego plush minifigure.

He also received a few books and, of course, the Star Wars pillow that I made for him.

In all, I think he had a special celebration, and really the whole weekend was celebration! Welcome to 11, Philip!

celebrating Philip

I fear I'm woefully late in posting this, but we celebrated the big double digits with Philip last Friday.  We left on a camping trip the next morning, so although we celebrated fully, there just wasn't time to post about it before we left.

He, of course, had a birthday ring decorated for autumn and some of his favorite things, cats.  The picture I chose to accompany the birthday ring was one I knew would make him laugh, from an adventure this summer when he and Paulie were splashing each other with water from a frigid waterfall.

We had a dinner of his request: homemade pizza with green smoothies.

Elizabeth, as per her usual, decorated the house to remind everyone who this special day belonged to.

We lit the birthday ring just before dessert and he made his special wish.

Philip is the most introverted of all of our children and he's interesting to watch when he becomes the center of attention.  He's often a bit silly.

His special dessert request this year was angel food cake with strawberries and fresh whipped cream.  I have to admit it's one of my favorites too so I was happy to oblige.

And then, of course, came present opening time.  He received mostly Legos with a new pair of pjs and books as sidelines.  Following his celebration, he was all business trying to put together as many Legos as possible before our camping trip.

Happy birthday, Philip!  I can't believe you've been in our lives for a decade. :)

a weekend with the littles

This weekend found the house with only half it's normal inhabitants.  Elizabeth is attending a family reunion with her dad and Paul took Paulie on a trip for his birthday. And then there were three: the littles and me.  I thought it would be fun to do a few autumnal things that would appeal more to the youngest members of the family this weekend.

We started our Saturday morning with a batch of pumpkin pie play dough. Although there's no actual pumpkin in this recipe, you'd never know with the aroma of pumpkin pie spices and hint of vanilla.  I didn't have a pumpkin pie spice blend, as called for in the recipe, so I used some cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger.

Both boys played with this dough for over an hour in the morning.

And Finn pulled it out again for another hour and a half in the afternoon.  The kitchen smelled quite lovely all day.

We also used some of a bushel of local apples (that still need to be put up!) to make an apple cinnamon German pancake.  I mostly used this recipe by Catherine Newman, increasing the eggs to 3 and the other ingredients accordingly.  I sauteed a smallish, peeled and finely diced apple in the butter and added about 1 tsp of cinnamon before adding the batter.  Yum!

In the afternoon, while Finn continued playing with play dough and Philip read quietly, I needle felted a few of these little festive ghosts to hang from the light over our kitchen table.

It's starting to feel quite autumnal here now.

Fortune Wookies and other paperfolding

We've had many things going on over the last week, with Elizabeth and I returning from camp and school starting for Finn and Elizabeth.  Of course, during one of the busiest weeks of our year, an author that Paulie and Philip have come to love came to town for a book signing.  I wasn't able to attend because it fell on the night before school started, and Finn needed a good night's sleep.  Paul took them to the book signing, and I received a complete debrief on their amazing evening when they returned.

Paulie and Philip returned from the book signing with Tom Angleberger's most recent edition in the Origami Yoda series, The Secret of the Fortune Wookiee.  While they were at the event, they not only pooled their money to buy the latest book, but they received a printout of a foldable Chewbacca to bring home.

Included inside the book was directions for making an origami Chewbacca and bonus directions for making Hans Foldo (ha!)

Needless to say, the kids spent most of the last few days making origami Star Wars characters.

Paulie eventually made Han Foldo, Chewbacca (the Fortune Wookiee), Jabba the Hutt, Darth Paper, Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, R2-D2, and a storm trooper.  (You can find the instructions for folding most of these at the Origami Yoda site.)

When we had exhausted all of the origami Star Wars characters, Paul sent us this link he found with some folded paper gnomes.  The boys had a great time making paper gnomes to use as finger puppets. (Finn only had to go to school for one day this week he was able to get in on the paper folding fun.)

{this moment} - concert

{this moment} - A Friday ritual. A single double photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. See Soulemama to play along.

weekending

Paulie and Philip were inspired this weekend by a video Paul found of this 7 year old who designed, hypothesized, tested and succeeded in making an amazing Rube Goldberg machine.
