Seeing Green

For the science fair at school this year, Paulie decided to turn our dining room into a mold lab. Few things make my skin crawl like intentionally watching bread turn from green to white to orangish jelly, but that's exactly what we did. I loved seeing him work through an experiment in such an official way, recording his question, hypothesis and conclusion.

The pondering:

Homemade bread after 3 weeks:

Health food store bread after 3 weeks: (yes, it's gross, just imagine if it were in your dining room still!)

Does it freak out anyone else that the regular store bread remains like an immaculate piece of cardboard after 3 weeks of sitting in my dining room? (This is not taking into account how long it spent on the shelf at the grocery store. Blech!)

The findings: the health food store bread and homemade bread are actually food, edible material; the regular store bread, well, it flatlined.

  1. Laugh. That's the reason we prefer to buy store bought bread to making our own. It lasts the 1.5 weeks to 2 weeks necessary for us to go through an entire loaf.

  2. Eeew. Mold. Interesting experiment. I think I'll try that with the kids (if I can stand it). I just threw out 4 petri dishes of mold and bacteria (I couldn't stand to see what was growing on our toilets and armpits!) Looks like Paulie did a great job!

  3. LOL! Oh my gosh, I'm shocked with how well the grocery store bread still looks! Ok, time to start making our own bread. Love this and will do this with the girls!

  6. Oh wow! The results are very interesting, although I'm not surprised. That was a great topic for a science fair.

  9. Oh my. I'm actually more disgusted by the store bought bread being perfect after 3 weeks. We go through a good amount of that stuff. That makes me so nervous to see. Loved his experiment. It sure taught me something.
