Earth, the movie

I took Paulie, Elizabeth and Philip to see the new Earth movie, by the Disneynature label, last night.  We really enjoyed this movie immensely.  I was a little worried for a few reasons--I thought Disney might cutesify (is that a word?) it, and I thought Philip might freak out during one of the few hunter vs. prey scenes.  As it turns out, I worried for naught, because the film was perfectly lovely.  The camera work came from the Planet Earth series, of which I have only seen certain parts, but was absolutely extraordinary.  The narration flowed beautifully with the various stories, and the movie perfectly suited kids in the 6-10 year old range, showing nature in it's glory alongside it's grim reality.

Paulie's favorite part:  a nest of ducklings jumps down from a branch to follow their mother with a not-so-graceful landing; runner-up was a bird of paradise whose face blended into his feathers when he danced, quite the funny sight

Philip's favorite part:  see the ducklings from Paulie's  ;)

Elizabeth's favorite part:
the 2 baby polar bears that began and ended the movie; their climb from their nest and descent down the frozen hill was particularly cute

My favorite part:
all of the above, plus the monkeys who weren't crazy about having to wade through waist high water in the savannah and reacted quite dramatically

  3. I'm glad to hear that the movie was good. I was a little disconcerted when I saw the trailer for it, because I recognized all the film from Planet Earth. I was assuming they were just trying to re-capitalize on the same shots. Sounds like maybe that wasn't quite the intention. I still haven't watched all of Planet Earth...I need to get on that! I'm really glad you guys enjoyed it!

  4. I am so glad to read this today! I've been wondering if this movie would be age appropriate for my almost 4 year old. It sounds like perhaps it's for kids a little older?

    thanks for the review!

  6. I'm SO glad you wrote about this...I've been hemming and hawing about taking Noah to see it (worried for all the same reasons) and am so excited to hear you liked it...because it is pouring and in the upper-30s this weekend and a movie sounds just perfect. Have you guys seen the dvds from the BBC Earth series? Those were a big hit here (no real hunting, etc. shown so pretty friendly for all ages, plus one dvd has an entire segment on this gigantic mountain of bat poop. And who wouldn't want to know more about that???

  7. Anelle, I think they were trying to make a more condensed kid-friendly version of Planet Earth. I also heard that although the footage was all shot for Planet Earth, 30-40% of what was shown in Earth never made it to the Planet Earth series.

Kristi, I would say it totally depends on your kid. Paulie and Elizabeth probably would have been fine at 4; Philip definitely would not have. I would say it's good for all 6 year olds and up though.

Kate, we haven't seen the BBC Earth series, but we definitely should. We watch lots of Jeff Corwin and the kids love those. Popular Mechanics for Kids on dvd are a fav too. Real life TV is just so much more interesting! Thanks for the rec.

  8. Thank you so much for the review. I thought Disney would "cutesify" it too. We will have to go and see it now.
