Candlemas and a groundhog

Today we celebrate Candlemas, in some of the same ways we have in the past. In addition to pancakes by candlelight, we will celebrate with our festivals community this weekend by making candles and welcoming the return of light at this half-way point to spring.

But for today, Finn is interested in any project that involves metal brads so we made this little groundhog who can see his shadow. This project is not an original, but I can't for the life of me remember where I got the idea. Essentially, you just need a groundhog coloring sheet and then cut him out, along with some black construction paper to roughly his shape, then attach them at the foot with a metal brad.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth has been walking around singing this folk song that she learned at school a while back. (She learned the words as "pull up your boots" instead of "shoulder up your gun".) It's really cute hearing a little vegetarian walking around singing about eating a groundhog though.

How are you celebrating Candlemas or Groundhog Day?
