travel food

When we first decided to take a trip to London, I knew that we'd need an apartment to suitably contain the 6 of us and allow us to eat somewhat close to the way we're accustomed to eating. So I've been buying easy to ship foods, like spelt pasta, brown rice and pancake mix, and packing a few boxes of food for us to take with us. I've also been letting the kids help me pick out which dried fruits, nuts, raw food bars, etc we'll be taking with us on the plane and for general snacking while we're out and about. Another area that the kids were able to help me with preparing the food for our trip was to make their own travel mix, which we did as a family activity this evening.

Elizabeth has a book which she likes to refer to when gathering the ingredients for our travel mix.

We gathered all of our supplies on our dining room table. (No, this is not a health food. It's more of a treat for them since we don't eat things like yogurt raisins, rainbow rings, or sundrops on a regular basis.)

Each kid had their own ziplock bag (no, we don't use those on a regular basis either) to fill with handfuls of their favorite ingredients.

Then we snacked on a few sundrops for good measure.

Now they'll each have their own bag of travel mix in their backpack to snack on when they feel a little munchie.

  1. This trip is going to be so exciting for you! How long will you be there? My hubby lived in Englad for a couple of years (Manchester area). :)

  4. That's a really cool twist on getting ready for the journey that I never thought of. I always pack everything in secret so that on the plane it's all a surprise. But this is an angle I'll have to try, I bet Z would like it. You're almost there!!

  5. That's smart to pack some of your own food for your trip. I know that I start to crave healthy, home-cooked food after too much restaurant eating.

  8. Have a lovely trip! Such a beautiful time to visit England. If we still lived in London we could have met up. We're in the Cotswolds now. Beautiful, quaint villages and rolling landscape.

  9. We'll be there for about a week, but it's much more cost efficient for a family of 6 to rent an apartment by the week than find a hotel room to meet our needs. Not to mention the money we'll save by cooking on our own!

Kelly, I wish you were still in London so we could meet! :)

  10. Yay, snack mixes! Sometimes, if the fancy organic cereal that I buy every so often because it's CRAZY expensive is on big, big sale, as it has been this month, I'll buy, like, two of every kind, and then several times a week instead of cooking we'll play "cereal bar." I set out all the different kinds of cereal, and walnuts, shredded coconut, frozen blueberries, etc., and the kids can fill their bowls with whatever they want. The LOVE mixing different kinds of cereal. I do, too, actually, and I also love sneaking myself some chocolate chips into my bowl, on account of I know where they're hidden.
