Yarn Along

This photo is a little blurry and post is a little vague because I'm working hard on Christmas presents now and trying to keep a few things a secret!  You can see a little bit more of my secret knitting project on Ravelry, if you're so inclined.

I've just started reading a book that I received for my birthday.  I'm thinking about ripping out all of the flower beds in my front yard and replacing them with edibles.  This book is giving me great ideas and overwhelming me at the same time.  I plan to start small, one bed at a time, and see how it goes.  The largest bed is slated to be ripped out this fall and planted with blueberry bushes and some perennial herbs, possibly.  I already have rosemary and lavender in different front yard beds which I really enjoy having out in the front of the house.  If anyone has experience with this kind of undertaking and wants to point me at a blog or other ideas, I'm all ears!

  1. I a so happy to hear you are knitting for Christmas, I am too :-) I haven't heard of this book, but will definitely be picking it up! We don't really have a front yard, just side and back yards, and I am all for digging up all of it for food :-) Starting small is definitely a good idea. I never can, and end up pulling a bunch of stuff that is crowded, or isn't working out well...but I don't plant any perennials...and probably should :-) A book that I absolutely love is The Backyard Homestead, there is a lot of good information in it for what you can do in your own yard.

  2. What would you like to know? I can ask my husband and see what he comes up with :) That book is very interesting. What a wonderful gift. I have wanted to grow rosemary all summer. And I just know I would mess up my husband's flower beds :) I am off to ravelry to check out your projects! Enjoy your week!

  3. sounds like my plans, i always think non-edible plants in the garden are a waste of precious space... on the other hand the bees and the butterflies love them too...

  4. I would love to do that as well, but I'm not sure what my neighbors would think. We are kind of on top of each other where I live. :-(

  5. Such beautiful secret knitting! Love the color.

I think I borrowed that book from the library but can't remember- I'd love to do this to our front yard since we're on a hill and it's sort of pie-shaped and our grass is always always always yucky. In fact, we were thinking of alternatives to grass. Just wondering about what to put in - do blueberry bushes lose their leaves during winter? I need to find things that look sort of good all throughout the year or maybe intersperse it. Keep us posted on your ideas!

  6. I don't know what I'm going to talk about when I start properly knitting Christmas gifts as everyone reads my page now. I will have to be very good at keeping secrets!
Garden planning is so much fun, isn't it?

  8. I want to read 'The Edible Front Yard' but my library doesn't have it. I'm going to see if I can convince them to buy a copy! Next year my front yard will be herbs and some fruit bushes and I'm trying to read as much as I can before we get started so I can make it work… xo

  11. I have been thinking about doing the same thing! In the process of taking all the old stuff out! Here is a blog that I found that is a bit helpful. http://www.rosalindcreasy.com/ I did hear the same rosemary, lavender and sage are good. But I am wanting to go a little more edible if you know what I mean. More like berries and such. I will be looking into this book and checking to see if you have posted more about this!
