apple picking

Although we woke up to a foggy almost-autumn morning with the threat of rain, we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best as we drove up into the mountains, just over the Virginia border, to the apple farm. While we didn't enjoy the same beautiful view as last time, the orchard shrouded in fog displays a subtle beauty different from the picturesque wide blue sky and mountain peak charm. It's easier to notice the wildflowers right in front of you, or the shading of the tree limbs. When we were soggy from our jeans down to our squishy shoes, we had about 1.5 bushels of apples, with more purchased from the packing house, and 5 happy soggy children. That's the essence of successful apple picking trip, I guess.

PS. The muffins you see in the photographs are Pumpkin Streusel Muffins. A requisite snack for any autumnal adventure, in my opinion.

  1. Wow! Beautiful photos of a wonderful looking day. That shot of Finn way up the ladder made me say, eeeek! Can't wait to see what you make from all of the apples!

  2. This is Ms. Herbert's 2nd grade class. We were wondering what kind of apples were you picking? Where did you get the ladders? Was Finn scared to climb up the ladder?

We live near the Brazos River in Texas, it gets foggy here too. We like apples too, but we don't see them on the trees near us. We are looking forward to our county fair, we see homemade food and quilts at the fair. Do you all go to fairs?

    1. We picked Mutsu, Cameo, Jonagold, and Golden Delicious apples. The ladders were already propped against the trees by the farm. This was Finn's first time climbing ladders at the apple farm. He was very excited. He's been waiting several years to be big enough to climb ladders at the apple farm! We have a county fair coming in just 2 weeks. We see lots of homemade food too, including ice cream made with the engine of a John Deere tractor. It's one of our favorite parts of the fair!
